Civilization’s 30th birthday: The winning poems #2

By | October 21, 2021

We picked recently our winners of the birthday contest for Civilization, who all received a copy of Old World sponsored by Mohawk Games, as well as a merchandise package. We now want to use this place to highlight these poems.

The second poem, which are actually multiple senryus, have been submitted by our user Hinin, and show us the various parts of the Civilization games.

“Golden Pyramids
To show the world my greatness.
Stopped : was not first.

My empire lost
Ravaged and seized by
A bloody doomstack

Scout was coming home
And had seen the whole world
Time for an upgrade

A solar arrow
Nuclear fire below
And Gandhi smiles.

An endless conflict
Celts, Vikings, Americans
A ten years long game

Districts, on the coast
My Norwegian ship arrives
Free yields incoming

Immortal leader
Top hat in Middle Ages
Don’t care anymore”

Civilization’s 30th birthday: The winning poems #1

By | October 20, 2021

We picked recently our winners of the birthday contest for Civilization, who all received a copy of Old World sponsored by Mohawk Games, as well as a merchandise package. We now want to use this place to highlight these poems.

The first poem has been submitted by our user topsecret. It definitely captures the Civ atmosphere.

“One day, I discovered a game.
Civilization was its name.
I logged on, and soon I would learn,
All I could say was “one more turn.”

I settled a city, a capital place,
I researched techs with remarkable pace.
Buildings in cities and units on hills,
Great People, Government, Culture, all thrills!

But then I found my neighbor.
He was this Montezuma guy.
Warring was his labor.
His real name was AI.

We fought a long war,
And as I was seated,
Through my cities he tore,
And I read…

YOU HAVE BEEN DEFEATED.

Just… One… More… Turn.”

Civilization’s 30th birthday: The winners

By | October 19, 2021

After a long time discussing the entries of the birthday contest, our team has finally decided about the best presents our users have given to Civ.

The 3 main prizes, a copy of Old World sponsored by Mohawk Games, as well as a Civ merchandise package, goes to our users topsecret, Hinin and MasterOaks.

The prize for best poetry entry (which was hard to decide upon, since the main winners also submitted poetry), which will receive a Civ4 Deluxe box and a merchandise package as well, goes to Romegypt.

After we had decided on these winners, we have selected in a random draw 3 of the entries, which would receive a Civ version of their liking. The random draw winners are Kyriakos, AntSou and Irealys.

Congratulations to everyone!

The winning poems will be featured this week on the main page and on Twitter, so either stay tuned, or have a look at all entries here: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/civilizations-30th-birthday-contest-give-civ-a-present-get-one-back.672969/
