10 Best PC Turn-Based Strategy Games to play in 2022

By | July 7, 2022

TurnBasedLovers, a website which obviously deals with our favourite type of game, has released another overview what they deem to be the best current turn based games for 2022.

Old World is probably already well known among the civ-fanatics, and is described as the following:

Created by 4X veterans, Old World is the perfect blend of Civilization and Crusader Kings. Not only will you need to grow your Bronze Age empire from a single settler to a thriving polity, but you’ll need to also keep the noble families happy and ensure the succession of the royal line. The characters you choose to govern your cities and lead your armies will have a profound impact on the game, so choose wisely!

The sci-fi strategy game “Cantata“, as well as the Heroes-of-Might-and-Magic inspired “Songs Of Conquest” are probably also worth a look for strategy gamers like us.

You can find the whole list here and discuss this latest entry in our forum here.

From Homemade Civ Maps to Humankind Mods: Amplitude’s Romain de Waubert Details How Mods Drive His Career

By | June 24, 2022

ModIO has released an interview with Romain de Waubert, creative director at Amplitude, about, his experience with modding, Humankind, and obviously Civ ;).

2 excerpts, first Romain about the future of modding:

Doug: What does the future of modding look like to you?

Romain: I would really like our modders to look at Humankind as an engine to create the mods of their dreams. If my team is listening to me right now, they will say, “Oh, my god, what is he saying?!” But I would love UI to be moddable — we nearly, almost, have that today. All of the gameplay elements, every single data in the game. In the end, your game should just be an engine for making games in the genre. You should be able to go far. You can imagine playing as a noble in his region, or as a family, or something like Crusader Kings. You could do a lot of things with the same engine.

And Romain about some Civ-things we know ;):

Doug: What are some of your all-time favorite mods?

Romain: Let’s see… Fall from Heaven, Day of Defeat, Counterstrike, Dota; these are mods of different games, but they are still kick ass. There was a Civ 4 mod that I loved called Rhy’s and Fall of Civilization; it was extremely smart. It would replay history with a sped up AI until it dropped you in front of a world generated by the AI playing. It was amazing.

Humankind is currently on sale, with a 33% discount, for only 33.49€.

Steam Next Fest demos: What to play for a civ-fanatic?

By | June 20, 2022

So, did you after all these years get bored of Civ6, and you already played through Humankind and Old World?Okay, we will not believe any of that, but if you want to try something else in between, why not check out the demos of the Steam Next Fest for a free test play?
A list of demos, which are interesting for a civ-fanatic:

  • Revival: Recolonization is a turn-based 4X game, in which you need to re-build civilization after an apocalypse, including city development and diplomacy. You also might find the ruins of some world wonders
  • Great House Of Calderia is a real-time 4X game, similar to the paradox games, set in the renaissance.
  • Terra Nil is the opposite of a city builder, where you need to re-store an eco-system from an industrial world, basically unmaking civilization (also on GOG)
  • Terra Invicta is a 4X game where you try to defend a divided earth against an incoming alien invasion
  • Farlanders is a turn-based builder where you try colonize Mars
  • Myriads: Renaissance is a turn-based builder set in a renaissance fantasy setting, where you need to conquer a world of flying shards
  • Citizens: Far Lands is a turn-based builder in a medieval setting
  • ZOR: Pilgrimage Of The Slorfs is a turn-based monster-fighting manager with really cute monsters

Not in the Steam Next Fest, but available on GOG is:

  • Ozymandias: Bronze Age Empire is the most-civ like game in this list. As Old World, it also focuses on ancient times, with multiple empires competing for hegemony.
