A Different Measurement of Culture: Percent of Victory Obtained

In this article I will be listing the %s that buildings, specialists, and commerce obtain towards legendary culture. With this, you will be able to more easily plan your obtainment of legendary culture in a city, by seeing what by what % certain assets will bring you towards completion, and easily add those %s together.
Benchmarks to keep in mind. The below shows years per turn until certain years, and the amount of turns that go by at that years per turn pace.

40 years/turn till 1000BC (75 total)
25 till 500AD (60)
20 till 1000AD (25)
10 till 1500AD (50)
5 till 1800 AD (60)
2 till 1920AD (60)
1 till 2050 (130)

This thread will assume Liberalism being obtained at 500 AD, and the game being finished at 1500 AD, and at Normal speed. While this doesn’t fit many games, you can adjust the provided %s I give relatively easy.

50,000 culture is necessary for legendary culture on normal.

BUILDINGS:
There are a few variables when it comes to buildings. A building doubles in culture 1000 years after it is built. This means that by building it 10 turns earlier, you don’t get 10 extra turns at normal culture. You get 10 extra turns extra at double culture. If you don’t build a building 1000 years before you get free speech, every turn you lose 2 times base culture, because you lose the the doubled culture being +100%.

You also have less turns of regular culture output the earlier you build, since earlier turns count for more years. If you build a building at 1 AD, you have 45 turns of normal culture output until 1000 AD, when it doubles. If you build it at 3000 BC, you only have 25 turns of normal culture output.

Example: Monument built at 2000 BC.
2000-1000 BC: 25 turns at +1 = 25 culture
1025BC-500 AD: 60 at +2 = 120 culture
510AD-1500 AD: 75 at +4 = 400 culture
total culture = 545. Round to 500.

500/50,000 = 1% of total culture needed. From now on no in-depth explanation of these same calculations will be done.

If you are adjusting the culture output for different build years, keep in mind, x 2 numbers would go away first, then x 4 numbers.
That is, you lose turns at double culture first by delaying construction, then turns at times 4 (with free speech) when you run out of x2 turns to lose.

Palace (never doubles, build date 4000 BC) = 135(2) + 75(4) = 1.1% (570)
Cultural trait would add same for capital, 1.1%.

Monument(build date ~1500 BC) = 1% cultural victory.
Theater (build date 500 BC) = 40(3) + 75(12) = 2% victory (1020)
Terrace (build date 1000 BC) = 40(2) +20(4) + 75(8) = 1.5% (760)
Library (Build date 1000 BC) = 1.5% (760)
University(build date 500 AD) = 75(6) = .9% (450)

Maoi Statue (build date ~500 BC) = 40(4) + 75(16) = 2.7% (1360)
National epic (build date ~ 1 AD) = 20(4) + 25(8) + 50(16) = 2.1% (1080)
Heroic Epic (build date ~500 AD) = 75(8) = 1.2%

note the above 3 buildings could be interchanged, since they all give the same culture.

Globe Theatre (build date ~ 500 AD) = 75(12) = 1.8% (900)

Stonehenge(Build date ~1000 BC)= 40(8) + 20(16) + 75(32) = 6%(3000)
Oracle ” ”

Pyramids (build date ~ 500 BC) = 40(6) + 75(24) = 4% (2040)
Hanging Gardens(build date ~1 AD) = 20(6) + 25(12) + 50(24) = 3.2% (1620)
Great Lighthouse ” ”

Great Wall (build date ~1000 BC) = 40(2) + 20(4) +75(8) = 1.5% (760)
Great Library (build date ~1 AD) = 20(8) + 25(16) + 50(32) =4.3% (2160)

Parthenon (build date ~500 BC) = 40(10) + 75(40) = 6.8%(3400)
Parthenon (build date ~1 AD) = 20(10) + 25(20) + 50(40) =5.4% (2700)
Mausoleum (build date ~500 AD) = 75(20) = 3% (1500)

Mausoleum and Zeus and others interchangeable with parthenon, same culture

SPECIALISTS:

Great work by Great Artist = 4000 = 8%.
Great artist specialist (joined 500 BC) = 40(14) + 75(28) = 5.4% (2735)

keep in mind that is only with 100% multipliers, so the Great Artist at 500 BC would surpass 4000 with other bonuses. With hermitage at 500 AD (unrealistic, estimate), and sistine chapel at 500 AD, would be…
Great Artist specialist (joined 500 BC) = 40(14) +75(48) = 8.3% (4160)

The 40 turns pre-free speech + hermitage make up 480 of that.

Artist give +4 culture per turn. Therefore, 125 artist turns gives 500 culture, or 1%. I will give comparisons of all artist outputs such as this.

125 artist turns = 1%.
63 artist turns with +100%= 1%.
42 artist turns with +200%= 1%
32 artist turns with +300% = 1%

80 artist turns with sistine chapel = 1%
42 artist turns with sistine chapel (+100%) = 1%
28 artist turns with sistine chapel (+200%) = 1%
21 artist turns with sistine chapel (+300%) = 1%.

So if you had sistine chapel, and +200% starting at liberalism, you would have 75 turns until 1500 AD. Assume you work 2 artists per turn. That is 150 artist turns, and 150/28 =5.3%. If you worked on average 3 artists per turn those last 75 turns, you would create 8%, or the same as a great work.

To use artist turns for %s you have to predict how many artist turns you will have for the rest of the game, and then you can easily add the %.

COMMERCE:
commerce is quite simple. Here is a chart.

With +0%: 500 commerce needed for 1%.
With +100%: 250 commerce needed for 1%.
With +200%: 167 commerce needed for 1%.
with +300%: 125 commerce needed for 1%.

So if you have 5 towns in a city, with free speech, that is 35 commerce per turn. If you have +200% in that city, you need 167 commerce for 1%. 35 x 75 turns post 500 AD = 2625/167, or 15.7% of needed culture.
The same city except 10 towns would be able to create 31.4% of needed culture in those last 75 turns.

_________________________________________________________________

So here is a sample capital, planning for legendary culture, with only +100% modifiers (only free speech) at 500 AD – 1500 AD.

creative = 1.1%
Palace = 1.1%
monument(1500 BC) = 1%
Library(1000 BC) = 1.5%
Stonehenge(~1000 BC) = 8%
Theatre(500 BC) = 2%
National Epic(~1 AD) = 2.1%
Great Library(~1 AD) = 4.3%
University (500 AD) = .9%
Mausoleum (~ 500 AD) = 3%
Total from non-specialists, non-commerce = 25%.

(10 towns + 8 from cap + 8 from trade routes =86 CPT, times 75, /250) = 12.9%
4 artists with sistine chapel for 75 turns = 10.7% (450 artist turns, 42 needed for 1%)

This totals to 48.6%. So about 6 GA bombs would be needed to get the required culture by 1500 AD.

So since this capital would have a low projection, it would be a target for more culture multipliers. While it may be difficult to figure in varying multipliers (+200, + 300) without calculations, by looking at the base projections it can then be seen how much more may be needed. I will add an estimate of how much multipliers add in a bit…
