Download the Practice Scenario Click here to download the practice scenario for Engineered Forests in Civ3. You will be downloading a V1.29 compatible, compressed .bic file that contains the scenario setup. To use this file, you need to start your Civ3 program and select “Load Scenario” from the main menu. Then locate the scenario file named “forestry_engineer.bic”. When you load this file, introductory announcement should appear and then you will progress to the Player Setup screen where you choose a few options to configure the practice session. Configuring the Scenario for Practice Play This scenario will allow you to choose whatever civilization you would like to play in the example circumstances. The civilization you choose, will affect the cost of improvements and the worker productivity rate. Do not choose Egypt, America, China, or France as your civilization if you wish to practice standard worker moves. The starting positions already have a number of units in place in some of your towns. If you choose a civilization that has a Unique Unit (UU) that substitutes for units like warriors or spearmen, this will create a slight mismatch where you will have some warriors and/or spearmen when you should have the Unique Units for your civilization instead. This will not corrupt the game even though it may look weird. Since our focus is on worker task management for forestry operations, these substitute units should not impact your ability to move and assign tasks to your workers. Except for the assigned city positions and the preloaded starting units, all the rules in this scenario are set to match the default rules for the standard V1.29 version of Civ3. You can choose your own difficulty level to play the example scenario and this will primarily impact your tech progression rate. On emperor or deity level you citizen happiness will be reduced by 1. The higher difficulty levels will give some unit bonuses to your enemies so you need to be cautious about these choices. Because the timeline is more advanced and most of your rivals have the same technologies and resources that you have, these military bonus units may be things like swordsmen, horsemen, and spearmen when you are used to the initial starting play sequences when these bonus units might be warriors and archers. For most people, I recommend you play the practice scenario on Regent Difficulty. When the scenario first loads, you will need to fortify all your units in the correct positions and set the production queue targets to match the items you want to build. Look at these production choices carefully, but I strongly recommend that you build at least three more settlers fairly quickly to fill out some open spaces in your territory. If you ignore these open gaps, you will probably be in a conflict situation with two of your neighbors in about 15 or 20 turns. You probably do not need a lot of additional military units right away but you should decide if you need a few offensive units to strengthen your empire. If you want to be a warmonger, go right ahead. Remember that you will have an objective to complete and that objective may not be enhanced by being too much of a warmonger. The colors for your civilization and your rivals in this scenario are pre-assigned by the starting positions. So do not assume that France will be purple or that England may be orange etc. Your starting position will always play as red regardless which civilization you choose. As you can see from the Player Setup screen for the scenario, you will have three rivals if you do not suppress some of them. One of these rivals may be on the same continent as your start position and the other two are close by within easy galley reach. There are no barbarians on this map, so your only concern will be to complete your objective quickly and efficiently while trying not to have your enemies disrupt your progress. There are no strategic resources beyond iron and horses, so you need not worry about military progression beyond Longbows and Knights in the medieval age. Forestry Operations Objective Our purpose in this scenario is to let you practice some of the crew grouping and team task assignments that are described in the Engineered Forestry Operations. You begin the scenario with a number of units in many places but our real focus is on the stack of 11 workers that you have in your capital city. Your objective is to take these 11 workers and perform and organized sequence of Engineered Forestry tasks to connect across the continent to your frontier town on the far northwest coast. The name of this town will vary depending on which civilization you choose, but the location is always the northern most town on the map. When you first begin to move your crew of eleven forestry workers, I recommend that you assign six workers to plant forest on squares that already have roads. Assign the remaining five workers to build roads. Keep the planters assigned to plant forests for 2 cycles (or six turns). When the five workers building roads have finished those squares. Move all five of them the forest square nearest to Kyoto where all five of them can reach the forest and begin clearing the forest without a turn lost to movement. When the six planters have finished their second planting cycle, reassign three of them to build more roads in a strategic direction and leave the remaining three workers together as a team of planters. From this point forward you should be able to practice the optimized Forestry Operations sequence to work across your territory.
